United States Government Apologizes For Slavery?

After 400 years of slavery and decades of Jim Crow, the United States government is making moves to apologize to African Americans for past injustices.
Rep. Steve Cohen, a white law maker representing a majority black district introduced H.Res. 194 introduced the non binding measure, which will come up for a vote today.
Several states have apologized for slavery, but if Cohen's measure passes, it will be the first time the federal government has acknowledge slavery and Jim Crow and its effects on the black community.
"African-Americans continue to suffer from the consequences of slavery and Jim Crow -- long after both systems were formally abolished -- through enormous damage and loss, both tangible and intangible, including the loss of human dignity and liberty, the frustration of careers and professional lives, and the long-term loss of income and opportunity," H.Res. 194 says.
According to a CNN report, the resolution does not

Killer Mike’s Top 10 Political Songs of All Time

When Killer Mike released his critically acclaimed manifesto I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind II earlier this month, he joined a long tradition of political protest music. From Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit” to Ice Cube’s “Endangered Species,” music in the 20th century had regularly spoken to the soul of man by challenging societal ills exacerbated by the status quo.

Now in the new millennium, Killer Mike takes a moment to reflect on the songs that inspired his conscious awareness and artistic direction.

10. Rage Against the Machine “Bulls On Parade” (1996)

“Man the lyrics 'Rally around your family with a pocket full of shells.' A lot of times we as Americans think military and police are supposed to protect and take care of us as citizens. And when that goes wrong the same people that were there to protect you and the government that’s supposed to support the persons that are apart of the country often turns against its people. That’s what spoke to me.”

It had an anger and a angst that was needed.”

9. Cypress Hill “I Wanna Get High” (1993)

“The legalization of marijuana is about a lot more than people just wanting to get high. Hemp can end a lot of our problems in terms of cutting trees and the making of paper. Hemp has dozens of medical uses. It can be used for different fibers in clothing. It really is a wonder plant. And the fact that it’s illegal in America speaks more to the fact that legal cigarettes and beer want it to stay illegal than it does about this drug [having] any real harmful side effects, besides making you eat and go to sleep.”

8. N.W.A “F**k tha Police” (1988)

“This song really was a retaliation cry against what was happening to young people in Los Angeles when the news wouldn’t even acknowledge it. Ten years later you get a Rampart investigation, and find out the police force in Los Angeles was actively doing whatever it could to be the judge, jury, and executioner for street level gang members. (It’s) another example of when ‘policing’ citizens becomes a force of people ‘occupying’ citizens.”

7. 2 Live Crew “Banned in the USA” (1990)

“2 Live Crew and Ice-T in particular, who I didn’t have on this list but should have, were actively in the censorship fight. The reason we can say what we want to say now, or think we can say what we want to, is because 2 Live Crew fought that Broward County judgment. They fought it and made sure that rappers would forever be able to say whatever they wanted to say. Ice-T did a similar thing after “Cop Killa” with (his rock band) Body Count.”

A lot of rappers talk about they’re real but ain’t nobody really went up against the US government. And I’m not just talking about testifying in front of government, but to literally have your life on the line. If you lose that case, you go to jail.”

I look at Luther Campbell in particular as the Larry Flynt of our day. Someone who had the money, resources, and most of all the courage to go head to head with the US government and win on behalf of the US citizens. It gave us the right to say what we wanted, and when we wanted.”

6. Geto Boys “Crooked Officer” (1993)

“Southern rap is often looked at as just smooth s**t, cool s**t, or pimp s**t. But the Geto Boys in particular always had a socio-political message in their music, whether it was ‘City Under Siege’ or ‘Crooked Officer.’”

‘Crooked Officer’ was relevant then and it’s relevant now. It’s good to hear southerners do some of the same type of music that was coming out of other places but with a southern spin on it.”

It was great to hear Big Mike, Scarface, and Bushwick just expound more on what N.W.A touched on in “F**k the Police” and what KRS did in “Black Cop.” It’s always going to be one of my favorites.

5. dead prez “They Schools” (2000)

“I like this because dead prez [says what] Black people have known for years; just because we’re integrated doesn’t mean those people have fully accepted us and it doesn’t mean they’re willing to educate us.”

The same people that run bad hospitals and give you bad jobs and don’t pay attention to the garbage on your street are the same people that run the schools. And if White people don’t trust their (public) schools and are taking their kids out to private and charter schools, how do you think the quality of education is going to be for Black children?”

4. Paris “Bush Killa” (1992)

“You could never make this record again in America. It was off the Sleeping with the Enemy album. It was the fanciful and imaginary story of a Black activist/rapper knocking the president off.”

And it’s important that people remember Bush Sr. now is just an old, funny looking man that people laugh at, but this man was once the director of the CIA. This man had full knowledge of the Iran-Contra Scandal which was funded through the Contras with crack used as the resource to do that. And it destroyed our whole community.”

So I think it’s only appropriate that a man that would kill a whole community gets a song dedicated to him. Thank Paris for that.”

3. Public Enemy “Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos” (1988)

“’I got a letter from the government/The other day/I opened and read it/It said they were suckers…’”

What the f**k can you say after that? Chuck let it be known, man. He always reminded you no matter how far we’ve come; we’ve still got a long way to go. “

2. Immortal Technique “Bin Laden AKA Tell the Truth” (2004)

“I like that fact that Mos Def and Immortal brought it home on the original. We’ve been taught by the government to be afraid of Arabs and Bin Laden. But as a person of color in America more acts of terrorism have been done to me by agents of my own government as opposed to some outside force. As a poor Black man in America I’m going to be more afraid of the power of my government than some spooky man with a weird beard.”

Bin Laden didn’t destroy the projects. Our f**king government did that. They (Arabs) aren’t persecuting us here our government is doing that. “

Mos Def said on Bill Maher ‘I ain’t scared of Bin Laden,’ and that’s straight the f**k up. It’s that around the way knowledge that we need and this song made me a full-fledged Immortal Technique fan.”

1. Killer Mike feat. Ice Cube “Pressure” (2008)

“This song is different from the others in that instead of dealing with the ‘boogeyman’ or the government etc, I really get at Black leadership and the government on behalf of all people, not just Black people.”

We shouldn’t live in fear of our government and Black leaders got to learn to understand (that). For 40 years you’ve been preaching that we shall overcome s**t to us, and when we finally decide to make decisions out on our own and that we’ve overcome, your ass better come with us or get left the f**k behind.”

‘Pressure’ is the type a song I talked about doing when I was standing in the trap wasting my life. It’s the type of song I needed to hear during my freshman year at Morehouse College, and that’s why I gave the world that song.”

I can’t give you all the answers because I don’t have them. But I can tell you if you put the pressure on the right people, you’re going to come up with some of the answers because those people will reveal some of the solutions they’ve been hiding.”

Rap Cassette Sales Thrive In Prison Market

At a time when record sales have decreased dramatically due to downloading the thought of a business thriving off of CD and even cassette sales seems almost absurd, but a business owner in Los Angeles had made what may seem like the impossible possible.

Pack Central, a mail order company owned by Bob Paris, has earned over one million dollars annually for the past few years in CD and cassette sales from its bi-annual catalogue which is sent to prisoners.
Prisoners are able to purchase music from Pack Central through a trust account that is created on their behalf by family members who fund the account and Paris is reaping the benefits.

"I have dodged every conventional bullet that has hit most music retailers," the Pack Central owner told the New York Times. "I don't have to worry about downloading, legal or illegally. The beauty of it is that prisoners don't have Internet access and never will."
Since CDs are banned in most prisons, cassette's make up 60% of Pack Central's unit sales and for the past five years Paris has been stocking up on them.
"People thought I was nuts when I invested tons of money in analog prerecorded music on tape," Paris shared.

Pack Central's current best sellers include Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III , Mariah Carey's E=MC2, Usher's Here I Stand and Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad.

50 Cent Sues Taco Bell for $4 Million

In late June advertising representatives for Taco Bell made what they call a "good faith, charitable offer to 50 Cent." In a written letter, the company propositioned 50 to change his nickname to either 79, 89 or 99 Cent for a day while rapping his order at one of their restaurants. In return, the company would make a $10,000 donation to any charity the rapper chose. The Mexican-style fast food chain released the following letter to the national press in June, before the original copy eventually reached the 50's offices.

"Dear Mr. Jackson: We know that you adopted the name 50 Cent years ago as a metaphor for change. We at Taco Bell are also huge advocates of change. In fact, for just a few spare coins, we’re giving consumers more variety for less money with our new 79-89-99 Why Pay More value menu . . . So here’s our offer of change to you: For one day this summer, change your name either 79 Cent, 89 Cent or 99 Cent by showing up to one of our more than 5,600 locations nationwide and rapping your order in the drive thru with your new moniker."

According to legal documents filed yesterday in New York federal court, 50 (née Curtis Jackson) and his legal team of Peter D. Raymond and Wallace B. Neel allege "Taco Bell made him the star and focus of its nationwide advertising campaign by using his name, persona and trademark to promote Taco Bell's business and products." Currently 50 has deals with Right Guard, Vitamin Water/Coca-Cola, Steiner Sports, Reebok and other major corporations.

Nas And Others Petition Fox News

When Nas dropped his Untitled LP with "Sly Fox" in the track listing, many saw the more political side of Mr. Jones. On the track, he goes in depth to speak on Fox News and what they refer to as "fair and balanced" reporting. He voices his distaste and attacks Bill O'Reilly in the process. Although that was simply one song about the matter, it appears that Nas is taking the inspiration for the track and being active about stopping the news corporation from continuing what he calls "patterns of racist attacks against black Americans."
A petition has been signed by 620,000 people so that Fox News stops those said "patterns of racist attacks." Nas, ColorofChange.org and MoveOn.org have issued a statement noting that this petition will be sent to Fox offices in Manhattan today, July 23, 2008 at 2:00p.m EST.
Nas' statement on the matter cites Fox's declaration of Senator Barack Obama's wife Michelle Obama as "Obama's baby mama." He also cited Obama being confused with Osama Bin Laden on the network and a pundit claiming they both should be assassinated. Another instance of this cites Bill O'Reilly talking about a "lynching party" for Michelle Obama.
"Fox poisons the country with racist propaganda and tries to call it news," Nas said in the statement.
James Rucker, executive director of ColorofChange.org added to this.
"When Fox talks about lynching the woman who may soon be our first lady and then refers to this wife and mother as a 'baby mama,' they are maligning not only the Obamas, but black women and black people across this country," Rucker stated. "We have over 600,000 signatures -- more than half a million people -- saying that we won't stand for Fox's racism and hate-mongering."

Dr. Dre Teams With Monster For Headphones

Legendary artist and producer Dr. Dre, Interscope Geffen A&M Chairman Jimmy Iovine and leading audio/video accessories company Monster, announced today (July 22) via press release that their new Beats by Dr. Dre high definition powered isolation headphones will be available July 25th at Apple retail and online stores, Best Buy retail and online stores, as well as the official website beatsbydre.com, for a price of $349.95.
With the help of Monster, Dre and Iovine hope to provide consumers with high-level audio performance headphones, meaning extreme clarity, deep bass and full power which they believe have been lacking in conventional headphones. By combining new advanced materials, sophisticated construction, extra large drivers, and a powerful digital amplifier, The Beats by Dr. Dre high definition powered isolation headphones have the capability to reproduce the crisp, clear sound that musical artists and producers hear in professional recording studios.
Dr. Dre says via press release: "Artists and producers work hard in the studio perfecting their sound, but people can't really hear it with normal headphones. Most headphones can't handle the bass, the detail, the dynamics. Bottom line: the music doesn't move you. With Beats, people are going to hear what the artists hear and listen to the music the way they should - the way I do."
Furthermore, to recreate the quietness of an isolated recording studio listening experience, the headphones also feature powered ambient noise-isolation, allowing consumers to hear all the details and nuances in their music.
Convenience is also key as the headphones come with additional Monster iSoniTalk headphone cable with integrated high grade microphone and answer button for consumers with music-enabled phones.
"Dre and I have been developing these headphones for a while and in Monster we found a partner that could work with us to crystallize his vision and develop them to the quality level he expects," said Jimmy Iovine. "Beats By Dr. Dre is yet another example of Interscope's commitment to working together with its artists in developing new avenues to experience music."

The headphones will be available starting July 25th.

Skillz: 5 Ways To Know You’re A Backpacker

Backpack rap isn’t dead yet. At least not yet. But in the past year, backpackers have seemingly taken a back seat to tight jeans-wearing hipsters. [Editor’s Note: Is there really a difference?] They’re are still out there. One of our staffers caught up with proud backpacker, Skillz, to find out exactly what makes a backpacker.

XXL Staffer: Name five things that makes you a backpacker.

Skillz: You haven’t been on 106 & Park yet (1). You haven’t been on TRL yet (2). They’re not on your radar. They wont be on your radar until the company decides to put a little more money in your backpack. You’re not on tour with Jay-Z (3).

XXL: Jay shows backpackers love, though.

Skillz: Who? Who?

XXL: Some consider the Roots backpack. And what about 9th Wonder? He got him on “Threat” from The Black Album and on two songs on Destiny’s Child’s last album?

Skillz: He didn’t take him on tour. [Laughs] He took Just Blaze. We do good when we down here. See if I was Jay-Z I would definitely find who the hot underground artist is and do a song with him.

You’re Not Invited To Any Award Shows. Unless they wanna put you on the cipher in their show on the rooftop. If you don’t have any of the old Jordans…You gotta have something that reminds people of that era. You gotta be able to go back to some degree. If you don’t have no throwback, retro nothing. It’s not the same.

XXL: Would you say that anybody who doesn’t fit those, may have to consider themselves a backpacker?

Skillz: May have to. –XXL Staff

Rakim, The God MC Preps New Album "The Seventh Seal" For Fall Release

After a brief stint on Aftermath Records that saw his highly anticipated collaborative album with Dr. Dre permanently shelved, it would be easy to assume Rakim picked up that nasty habit of only releasing a new album every six years. While most us of were scrambling to hear the limited amount of leaked material from Oh My God via the Internet, Ra promised what he felt was a less compromised sound via his own label.
With Hip Hop’s Digital Age in full effect, Rakim Allah has the arduous task of proving he can continue to evolve and adapt. During a brief encounter backstage at Rock The Bells, Ra explained the delay with The Seventh Seal and the process of seeing sounds.

HipHopDX: What’s going on with The Seventh Seal?
Rakim: You can expect that two to three months from now. I’m going hard on that and I’ve got some surprises on there. I’m really ready to just let the world hear it.
DX: You listened to jazz and played saxophone as a child. How did that influence your style and your ear for music?
R: I think it let me see music a little more and let me see more colors. My moms and my pops loved music. Coming up being around jazz and the Motown sound, and letting that soak in [helped]. I played the sax and the drums a little bit and that just helped me see the music a little more.
DX: You have such an extensive catalog, but you’re still creating music. As much as you respect your classics, is there ever a point where you want people to pay more attention to the newer material?
R: The old stuff is what got me here though. That’s like my foundation. I love that for what it is, and that’s what makes people understand me. They need that to know what I’m about to do next. So, in no way do I shrug my shoulders at the old stuff. That’s my legacy.

DX: With the industry the way it is with low sales and all the downloading, what would you consider a success for this project?
R: Well I have my own label [Ra Records] now, so I want to be a success in terms of sales. But, more importantly, I have to keep my integrity and hit that Rakim standard. If I can hit that standard I’m cool. I was never a big-selling artist. I was sort of underground my whole career, but eventually my albums touched platinum. So I still consider myself underground. Like I said, I just want to reach that Rakim standard and have everybody understand that I’m still that dude. If people see that I’ve progressed with it and I’m mature with it, then that’s my success.
DX: You’ve worked with some of the best producers out and you are rumored to have a very discriminating ear. What does a producer need to bring to put you in that zone?
R: You know what’s difficult for me? I hear music differently, so a lot of times I won’t pick the beats that are the norm. I don’t pick what people expect a rapper to rap on. I pick the more intricate beats, where as soon as I hear them I can see something—a title or a mood.

That’s what influenced me so much about jazz. A lot of jazz records didn’t have words, but as soon as you played them it put you right in the mood. You could almost see the smoky bar and the jazz players around you. So, when I can see the music before I even start to write to it, that’s the direction I tend to lean toward. A lot of times it’s not the big million dollar seller or the club banger. It’s really just something I can mess with to make people say, “Okay, that’s that Rakim classic thing right there.” So, yeah it’s a little difficult picking beats with me.
Rakim's latest effort, The Archive, Live Lost and Found, has been distributed via Koch and is currently available in retail and digital format

Nas Wants To Drop Albums Produced By Dr. Dre, DJ Premier On Same Day Hip Hop Producers

Rapper also explains how the Game's 'Make the World Go Round' ended up on Untitled.

By Shaheem Reid

A Jay-Z album produced entirely by Timbaland?

Certainly a dream scenario for some fans and the artists themselves. Another legendary MC has been thinking about pairing himself with one of the producers he's had combustible chemistry with throughout his career. On July 15, while performing in concert, Nas made a very public appeal to DJ Premier (who was not present) and said the people are waiting for them to make an entire album together.

Premo and Nas first collaborated on Illmatic, and ever since then, the legendary DJ/producer has given his lyrical friend classic tracks. But the two haven't worked together in quite some time — to the dismay of many. Nas is hoping to rectify that, and the Queensbridge great has another production king he'd like to collaborate with as well.

"I want to do an all-Dr. Dre album," he told MTV News. "A whole thing with Dre and a whole thing with Premier, and drop 'em on the same day. That's the real thing. All right, I said it. That's what I really wanna do.

"I'm doing my dream," he continued. "If you could, wouldn't you do it? What else would you do? Every time I do something, it's, 'Oh, he's doing it because this and that.' Since my first album, everybody has an explanation of why. What am I supposed to be doing here? So I wanna drop the Dre album and the Premier album on the same day. That's what I'm thinking."

Now before you go bombarding Nas and his two track-mastering friends with talk of these albums, Nas did say he was dreaming out loud and hasn't had any significant talk with Dre or Premo. But another producer recently caught Nas off-guard and ended up with a beat on Untitled.

"I ain't know," he said of the Game's production skills. The Los Angeles mic arsonist rhymes on "Make the World Go Round" and also produced the track. Cool & Dre also have production credits on the song.

"He just hit me with the track," Nas added. "I was like, 'Oh, that's what's up.' The record was Game's record, so he's like, 'Me, you, I'm going to see Chris Brown. Nas, we gon' make this movie, boom, boom, boom.' It was his record. I guess [it was going to be on] Game's album. It was gonna come out now, but he pushed his sh-- back, so he let me have his sh--. He's a smart n---a like that. I was like, 'What you doing with this record?' He gave it to me. He's got so many bangers [on his album], I guess."

One of the big bangers off of Untitled is the metaphorically supreme "Fried Chicken" with Busta Rhymes. Nas and Busta compare loving women to eating poultry and pork: "Fried chicken, fly vixen/ Give me heart disease/ But need you in my kitchen."

"When I was doing the album, I knew there was certain concepts I had to do," Nas explained. "There were obvious concepts, so many things to touch on, on an album that's supposed to be the N----- album. 'Fried Chicken' was just a no-brainer. So I did the first verse and had it. I knew everybody was busy. I couldn't think of anyone to get on it. I had hit up Common and I hit a few people. Everybody was trying to get back, and I had to turn it in, like, yesterday. Then it just dropped on me — boom! Who's got the science? Who knows all the science on all this sh--? The Godfather, Busta Rhymes. It was just perfect. I hit him [and] said, 'Please turn it around.' He was overseas. He knocked that sh-- out overseas, sent it to me. Done."

Nas is getting ready to head out on the road to headline the Rock the Bells Tour. A Tribe Called Quest and Talib Kweli are among the artists appearing on various dates on the tour.

Wolf Town Recordings Presents: LATE "2 Thousand & Late" Mixed by; Tricksta

LATE
'Two Thousand And LATE' (Mixed by Tricksta)
(Wolftown Recordings)
www.myspace.com/latewolftown

www.wolftownrecordings.com

Set for release in June, this new underground CD is a collection of freestyles, tracks, collobaz, remixes and everything LATE has been doing since his last outing 'Englishman In New York'. Weighing in with twenty tracks and a bonus cut, this mixtape is definitely something that really shows the diverseness of this experienced rapper. He brings positive and inspirational depths with cuts such as 'Something To Believe In', 'Smile' which also features Jai Boo and Houston rapper Ricky Lee, and 'So Serious' featuring Conman and Size8. Its almost has LATE has a presence that other UK Rappers seem to lack. His command, confidence and whole swagger continues to impress and tracks such as 'Why You In This?' should be compulsory to listen too for any new MC steps into the game. Other standout tracks include the Tricksta Remix of JT The Bigga's 'Wonderful Feeling' track which features LATE and Jai Boo. Street Military's KB Da Kidnappa and LATE join up for a real slice of street poetry on the Tricksta produced 'Ghetto Life' and then LATE absolutely kills it on 'We Stay Hustlin, Grindin' as does Jai Boo which sees her up the ante on the luscious sung vocals, and some of the posse tracks worth their weight in gold. Jon Conners, Lo-Keys, Stress, Brick Saavy, Famoso, Mokeout, Cee-Rock "The Fury", Dyce, Nut-Rageous, Panama, Jak Daniels, SPC's Thugstar, Murder One and Kuwait all feature and DJ Loon slows and chops a track for the last track. I wondered why LATE is creating such a buzz in the States and in Europe, but after hearing this CD I fully understand why. He doesn't make Gangsta Rap or UK Hip-Hop or Grime or Street Rap he makes LATE music and that's what makes his one of the Best MC's from the UK. Make you cop this release, you need it.

Rack-Lo "Golden Era Terror" reviewed by RAGO MAGAZINE (EUROPE)

RACK-LO 'Golden Era Terror'(Lo Lifes)WWW.SPITFACTORYONLINE.COM

This cat can rap. No doubt man. This emcee is tight yo! Pure Hip-Hop flavours run throughout this mixtape as does the legendary Thirstin Howl 3rd and the talented Richie Balance. Now most emcess from New York seem to be on that 'crak, hoes, materialism, money, ice' vibe, but not Rack-Lo. Nope. He is on-point and gives you thought provoking music with intelligence and realness in his rhymes. Feeling 'Hip-hop Movies', 'That's Golden Era' and 'The Deuce' – tracks you need in your life! Make sure you watch out for this mixtape, this is something the UK are gonna be feeling. Hip-Hop music to file next to Slick Rick, Big L, Kool G Rap and Nas. Hefty mayne!
